A small school in Virginia, located near our nations capital, has been vandalized by a group of racists. This school was opened in 1862 as the "Ashburn Colored School". Lately local students have been working to restore the school as a future museum. Sadly, six months of work has been thrown away and covered with pictures of swastikas and even genitalia. Local sheriff Chapman has vowed to find the culprit(s), and says that vandalism will not be tolerated here. Authorities have offered 1000$ as a reward for information on this case.
I think this article, written by Max Blau at CNN, reflects america's history of racism and how it sadly still rears it's ugly head no matter how hard future generations try to overcome even our darkest history. This article was written to convey the tragedy this historic building has endured. It's significant because it shows that racism is something we still must fight. Through shootings, racist remarks, ruthless politicians, and even disgraceful graffiti. Racism is everywhere, but the locals of this small Virginia town are doing their best to fight it.
