Pandas have been officially removed from the endangered animal list and moved to "vunerable" animal list! China, however, is still worried about their survival. As temperatures rise an estimated 30% of bamboo plants (their main food source) will die. Although the panda population is rising, they might not be out of the woods just yet.
Similarly, when the colonists arrived in North America they discovered the large amounts of buffalo roaming the plains. These giant animals were a primary source of food for the Native Americans, who knew how to benefit from them without exhausting the population. The Europeans were not as smart and hunted them until they were next to extinct. Fortunately, many years later, thanks to bills and reservations protecting the buffalo their population is now stable.
It is great to hear that pandas are no longer on the endangered list! Hopefully they will be like the buffalo and make a complete turn around and grow a stable population.
ReplyDeleteIts unfortunate that just as people are helping the panda come out of its endangerment, the issue of climate change is growing. The growth of climate change will likely bring many, many similar problems.
