Summary: Many people would rather have a ten- hour and four-day workweek rather than a five-day workweek with eight hours a day. Even though the four- day workweek sounds better, it has its perks and downfalls. The good thing about having a shorter workweek is that people will be allotted the time to spend with their families and do leisurely activities. That extra two hours a day also can shorten the free time you have at home after work. This has its negative effects because losing hours of sleep is not going to help with a person emotionally, physically,or mentally. Research has shown that people with overtime shifts are at a 61% higher risk at suffering an industrial accident. The amount of time of an overtime shift is about the amount that would be equivalent to one day in a four day week. Another problem is that the amount of work that you do in a five-day week would have to be squeezed into a four-day week, which will cause more stress on the worker. We should ask ourselves is it worth the added stress. Its not worth sleep deprivation. Even though people would have an extra day to be home, they won't be spending that time with their families, which is the actual purpose of the shorter week proposal.
Synthesis: Allard Dembe is the author of this article. The article is from The Conversation. The author's point of view that a four-day workweek is hazardous to health. The article was produced earlier this week, which shows that the information is relevant to today. Prior to reading the article, I thought that it would be effective to have a four-day week just because it sounds better than a five-day workweek, but after reading the article, I learned that it has negative effects that aren't worth going through. The article is written for individuals who work and go to school. It had a positive effect on the audience because it makes the audience want to consider both sides of this topic. This article was written to get the readers to understand the negative facts about extending the hours a day in a shorter workweek. It is important because it raises awareness to people who are for the shorter workweek, because it can be hazardous to health. This is relevant because the rates of the cancer, heart disease, or diabetes are going up in women who work over time. There needs to be rest time after work and on the weekends. In relations to US History or history in general, women couldn't have jobs that men had. Because of this, the men and children had to work long hours in the factories and didn't get paid a good amount. The child labor rates were through the roof and this was a time when education was put on the back burner. The best thing we can learn from this article that the we can all use a break every now and then.
I think this is something interesting and just as you have never really thought about how a four day work week would effect people. In hindsight it's really cool but I agree the cons outweigh the pros
