Ciaja Beck (4th period) Why is "TeacherBae" Being Shamed For Her Curvy Body?

Summary : According to the author Zeba Blay, voices culture writer, Huffington Post, discusses about a elementary teacher in Atlanta, Georgia who is receiving online criticism for looking "too alluring" on her job , once again, this calls attention to how black women's bodies are constantly regulated for ridiculous reasons. The 4th grade teacher Patrice Brown photo went viral on  Instagram because she was wearing a pink form-fitted, knee length dress. At first many people responded about how attractive and beautiful Ms. Brown looks, but then it backfires with people on Twitter advising that she was dressed inappropriately for the classroom. (Patrice Brown on the right helping one of her students.)

Analysis: I chose the picture on the right, because its just very funny to me that they posted the picture of her in the form fitted dress but not the one of her helping one of her students. If a black woman in America has a curvy body she's immediately judged and modified by something she has no control of. They're too busy focusing on her body, but not what type of teacher she is. Do not judge someone by their hair, color ,body size or their outer beauty because you might  miss out on who that person really is. Officials says Patrice Brown has deleted all her photos in the classroom. Was it really that serious? She shouldn't feel bad about her body at all she should embrace it, but we live in a society obsessed with the public's eye opinion. But individuality has never been popular.

  1. I completely agree with you that if a black women has a curvy body she is immediately judged for it. I think this story is ridiculous that she is being body shamed and people are saying that she looks "inappropriate" just because of her image.

  2. I like what you said about which picture the media chose to share. Instead of using the one that shows her doing her job as a teacher, they chose to use the one that was best fit to their interpretation of the story.

  3. I read an article about this situation and it compared one of the dresses that she had on to another woman wearing it without curves. No one had anything bad to say when it was a white woman without curves wearing it. The teacher can't help the fact that she has curves. As long as she is doing her job as a teacher, everything should be ok.
