Actress and Transgender Activist Dies - Sydney Bridgeforth
Summary:
Alexis Arquette, an actress and transgender activist, died Sunday while surrounded by members of her Hollywood famous Arquette family. Born Robert Arquette, the 47 year old actress/activist, recently identified as no longer identifying as a transgender. During an appearance on "Kocktails with Khloe," Alexis' brother David stated that she sometimes referred to herself as gender suspicious. Sometimes being a man and sometimes being a woman.
Alexis was one of the earliest high-profile advocates for transgender rights and said she identified with being a woman at a young age. In 2009 she stated that she was born into a "pretty liberal family." Having worn makeup since the age of 12, Alexis states that her liberal family was not in denial so much as their fear was that if she came out as transgender and lived life as woman that she would receive a lot of flak from people on the street.
Analysis:
This article was written by Lisa Respers France today. I do not recall reading any other articles from this author, but find that it was a well written article about Alexis Arquette. The article was written with respect and no personal point of view. To provide evidence of how Alexis was respected, she used quotes and tweets from family and friends. This was an online article that was written shortly after the actress/activist passed. I knew nothing about Alexis Arquette prior to reading this current event, but because the article states how she was one of the earliest high-profile advocates for transgender rights, it made me more interested in wanting to know what kind of work she did to aid in the movement for today's LGBT's. Because in the past, this class of people had little to no rights, the movement she started may have helped to provide more rights to the LGBT Community.
