Texas Teacher arrested After Slapping Student-Nicholas Watson, 9th

Summary:
A Texas high school teacher was arrested after a video surfaced showing the teacher hitting a student on the head repeatedly. Mary Hastings, the teacher in the video, is seen hitting the kid after he supposedly caused disruption to the class. Although we don't know what events led to the incident and what happened after, Beaumont Independent school District made a statement saying that the teacher was immedietly removed and placed on administrative leave.

Analysis:
I think I have two opinions about this story. One is from the position of the child and its family. I believe that, as obnoctious as a child can be, I still think, unless given permission too, other adults should never put their hands on minors. Not even from the fact that it may hurt the kid, because the kid in the video definitely was not phased from the hits and even proceeded to laugh towards the end of the video, but because it causes so many legal and even moral problems. She now faces jail time and has lost her job and probably any other job she could have possibly obtained. Now on the other side, in favor of the teacher, I believe that after a certain point of disrespect and disruption, that a child displays, punishment should definitely be enforced. Although, unlike the teacher in the video, this punishment should be taken and enforeced in a different way, to still ensure that the child receives consequences, but that the teacher is safe from any possible retaliation.

  1. I saw this video. I actually feel really bad for the lady, because in the video it was evident that the kid drove her crazy. Of course the media only sees the physical aspect of the video, and sadly she is facing lots of consequences for her actions, that probably needed to be done. (oops) -Carrington Whigham

  2. There is no question that those actions are 100% illegal. The student may have disrupted class which negatively affects all those present, but physical violence has no place in the classroom.
