Fighter Flight by Matthew Homsher 9th

Summary: Two unarmed Russian fighter jets passed extremely close to a US destroyer, the USS Donald Cook. There is currently a lot of discussion inside the Pentagon about releasing a video and photos of the incident showing the amount of danger the destroyer was in. The two jets flew within seventy-five feet of the ship’s superstructure and a third plane passed the destroyer from a safer distance. The first two jets passed alarmingly close to the destroyer at a high speeds without acknowledging the danger or the breach of security. However, what is alarming is not the high speed or the jets’ proximity to the ship; but the manner in which the pass was made. The two jets passed over the destroyer in exactly the manner that armed jets would swoop in for an attack. This all occurred in the Baltic Sea on Tuesday night.

Synopsis: Relations between the United States and Russia have been strained since the Ukraine incident. After that, tensions were pulled tighter by the fact Russia was supporting Bashar Assad against the Syrian rebels. This provocation is simply the next in a long line of recent aggressions by Russia. It seems the back and forth between the U.S. and Russia never totally warmed up after the Cold War. Aggression and suspicion still remain, and with good reason. We need to take a stronger stance towards these foreign provocations. The U.S. can’t let itself be bullied by Russia abroad.
