In the isolated community of Ontario First Nation of of Attawapiskat, there has been a rise in suicide attempts. There has been yoing and old members of society that are doing this. The situation came to a heartbreaking head this weekend, as community leaders in the tiny James Bay town were forced to declare a formal state of emergency after 11 people attempted to kill themselves Saturday. Saturday's shocking revelations follow another tragic month -- 28 Attawapiskat residents attempted suicide in March, more than 100 since September of last year. The numbers only keep rising.
This is absolutely terrifying. Why is this community's suicide rate so high? It seems so crazy to me how a small community can be so high in suicide be that inclined to take thier own lives? Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reacted to the news Sunday, calling the announcement "heartbreaking." Is this issue fixable? Maybe mental health treatment needs to be improved, that might fix some of the issue.
