Realization; the next president inherits the war on terror. Who do we want for that? Natalia Hernandez 9th

When Obama took office in 2009, he inherited the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and promised to end them. Something that we're all soberly aware he couldn't do. But he was eager to speak to Muslims around the world on behalf of Americans, to reset a relationship poisoned by the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Seven years later, Obama makes his first visit to a U.S. mosque—Islamic Society of Baltimore mosque—on Wednesday, eager to speak to America on behalf of its Muslim citizens, looking to counter what the White House describes as poisonous election-year rhetoric from Republicans. “They have fought in our wars, they have served in our government, they have stood for civil rights, they have started businesses, they have taught at our universities, they’ve excelled in our sports arenas, they’ve won Nobel Prizes, built our tallest building and lit the Olympic Torch,” he said.

I will never say that Obama was the best president that the U.S ever had. I disagree very, very strongly with him for many things, some such as his overseas drone war policy.  But that doesn't stop me from giving credit where its due, and I will always admire Obama as one of—first of all—the coolest presidents the U.S has ever had, and as a man who, right now, seems to be fighting to end this hatred towards muslims that's approaching the irrational. A man who has, through his entire precidency, tried to quell flames. What did prior presidents do in regards to this, other than toss fuel into the fire that is the war on terror? All these prospects leave me weary, and all I can see from people like Donald Trump is hatred, and another president that can see nothing but war, nothing but marginalization of law-abiding, patriotic Muslim Americans (among many others). And it is offensive. Offensive and terrifying. "We have seen a willingness on the part of leading Republican presidential candidates to try to appeal to people’s fears and anxieties." What good has this ever led to? Last time I remember, the Red Scare and irrational fear of communism IS what brought the birth of terrorism, and a destabilized and war-ravaged middle east in the first place.  Can't people see? What's history for, if not to learn from our mistakes? Trump’s call to halt Muslim immigration to the United States won considerable support in Congress, and public opinion polls in late 2015 found that a majority of Republican voters back Trump's idea.

Do we really want a man like that to take over the war on terror? All I can see is no end to an already long, weary war. More injustice, more hatred, more mistakes.
