New Precautions for Zika Virus// Arianna Sotero

There has been an worldwide outbreak of the Zika Virus, and recently, the virus entered the United States. The first infection was first confirmed in May of 2015 in Brazil. The outbreak in Brazil led to reports of Gulliain-Barre syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes. The CDC has just issued new guidelines that says pregnant women especially must refrain from sex and must get treated if any common symptoms are shown at all.

The Zika Virus is very complicated and the CDC does not have much information on it. This is similar to the large outbreak of smallpox, dysentery, etc. during the Gilded Age when immigrants were living in the unsanitary tenants. Although the Zika Virus is just as serious as these other diseases, it is spread sexually and by mosquitoes. This is just the beginning of the outbreak and I hope that the U.S. will take extra caution so that it does not spread any further.

  2. This virus is very scary, especially because I saw a report that someone in Dallas obtained the disease. We need to figure out how to stop this disease from spreading even further.
