Oregon Teen contracts Bubonic Plauge by Mattie Whisler 9th period Flex

A teenage girl from Oregon was infected by a flee while on a hunting trip in Marrow Country, Oregon. She started feeling sick on October 21 and was hospitalized on October 24. Officials say that the teenager is in the ICU recovering. It is rare that the bubonic plague was found in Oregon. There have been 8 reported cases since 1995. It is more commonly found in places like New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. The bacteria that causes the bubonic plauge is made naturally. It's easy for a flea to contract it from an infested rodent. The symptoms usually start 4-6 days after contact and can be easily treated if caught early. So far this year 4 people have died from the bubonic plague.

I'm glad that they caught the plague early enough to treat it. I think it's interesting that the bacteria made its way all the way up to Oregon, especially since it's usually found in southwest. If it can make it to Oregon who knows where else it will travel.
This reminds me of when the early colonists brought over all sorts of diseases and killed off a large number of Natives.

  2. I agree. It really is crazy how this plague traveled so far, but you have got to look on the bright side. We know how to treat this and save their lives.

  3. That is terrifying!! But it is incredible how much the bubonic plague effected those in the past, and now it can be easily treated if caught early enough.

  6. I've always thought the Bubonic Plague to be terrifying despite the modern technologies and medicines we have. I agree with Fern- it is still unusual to think of the plague as a deadly disease still occurring today, as it seems too long ago to still make an impact on people.
