Nasty online comments -Julianne Swaykus

Lately a lot of organizations have decided to get rid of online comments because of all the negative/unnecessary comments made by people. Some have started taking "letters to the editor" instead, because the tone of the comments left were "getting a little too aggressive and negative". "Research this year by University of Houston professor Arthur Santana found anonymous comments on online news sites can often bring out the vilest of views, particularly on hot topics such as immigration." Many organizations are going to ban anonymous comments and require registration to try and solve this issue.
I am glad that these organizations are noticing these comments and actively trying to do something to stop them. Comment sections are suppose to help the organization know what they are doing right or may need to improve on, and is not a place for hateful comments. People feel very powerful when making hateful comments because nobody knows their identity when they are listed under anonymous. I believe that making people register to make comments or having the comments appear under their name will make them at least second guess their decision if not stop them completely.

  1. I think it's really great that these organizations are making an effort to stop hateful comments. People feel very strong behind a computer in the comments section (I say as I sit behind a computer in the comments section). Maybe this will stop a little bit of cyber bullying as well. It's really all connected.

I definitely think that it is easier for people to say mean things when they are hiding behind a screen. I'm glad that organizations are taking a notice in this issue.

  3. I also think it's very easy for a person to say these hateful things behind a screen where they can't be touched. These organizations are making a great effort to stop these hateful comments.

  5. I agree with you, it's a great change to most sites now that you have to register in order to comment. A lot of that time that won't stop the bad comments, but at least it's harder to do and a lot of people lose the motivation to comment something mean when they have to create an account

  6. I'm glad there is change happening with the things that happen online. Hopefully people will think before posting nasty comments and realize they will eventually be deleted anyway. This will help contribute to end the amount of cyberbullying we see today.

  7. I think this is a great idea! I agree with you, if the comments are no longer anonymous, I think people will start second guessing what they have to say.
