Heather Hatch 8th period: 9 year-old Girl Paralyzed From Annual Flu Shot

9 Year-old student Breanna Browning was paralyzed from the waist down by a flu shot that her school administered to her. The parents know that she was a healthy girl until 8 hours after the flu shot. She started vomiting profusely and then two days after she was paralyzed and blind. She is now confined to a hospital bed when just a week ago she was a happy active child. test show that she got acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, or ADEM, a disease that can be contracted from a general vaccination in the form of a reaction. She has a Go Fund Me page set up and the doctors say she will never fully recover from the condition, even though therapy will take up to a year. I find this to be horrifying because the school was the one that administered it as a requirement. I believe that if parents don't feel comfortable with administering the drug that they should be excused. From personal experience my mother never wanted to give me shots because our family has a history of allergic reactions. My schools were always considerate of my moms opinions and i believe that her school should've been as well. Medicine has come a long way from earlier in history form when soldiers in war were dying because doctors never had the appropriate equipment or medicine to operate on them cleanly and safely. But medicine also has a long way to go.

  1. While vaccinations are so vital, this is shocking to read! I hope that doctors and chemists are working on reforming the vaccine. This story is really sad :(

  2. This story is really sad, and this shows why many parents now are hesitant to vaccinate their children with new medicine,
