Polio has been a raging disease world wide for a while, ravaging towns across the globe. The polio vaccine was then developed and perfected, and was given to all infected, and is continued to be given to babies. The shot is relatively cheap, but hard to access in places like sub Saharan Africa. Polio had continued to be ever present in Africa, until now. Only one kid in the past year has had crippling polio in Africa this year. Sewage is tested often to see if the virus can be found, and it hasn't been found in a while. Now, we are on the edge of permanently ending polio.
Am obviously ecstatic that this horrible disease impacts next to no one anymore. I seriously respect the people willing to dig through sewage for a good cause!
This connects the US history because polio itself heavily impacted many lives in be early twentieth century, causing paralysis. I am so thankful that that the disease is nearing its end!
For the STAAR and APUSH exam you will need to know who developed the Polio vaccine. Also which US president had polio and brought attention to the cause creating the March of Dimes?
