On Saturday rescuers managed to free a humpback whale from hundreds of feet of fishing line. The whale was spotted on Friday off the Orange County coast entangled mouth to tail with nylon rope streaming behind it. A team from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were able to cut away 100 feet of rope and buoys but the whale became agitated and dove deep underwater, keeping the rescuers from helping or seeing it for the rest of the day. It was spotted again on Saturday and the Sea World team was able to cut away the rest of the rope.
It makes me so happy that people go out of their way to help creatures even while endangering themselves. It makes me think we have come a long way from our whale fishing days. There are now so many organizations devoted to helping endangered animals, permanently handicapped animals, and of course other people who are physically, mentally, or financially in need. Because off all the horrible and humiliating things that happen all around the world, we all sometimes fail to see how much we have truly improved.
I think it's great that people care about these animals. These animals deserve to be free, not tangled up in a net.
