Why do screams scare us? A new study says that screams scare us because they target a special acoustic "sweet spot" in our brain. Screams are usually loud and have a high pitch sound. "But there's lots of stuff that's loud and there's lots of stuff that's high pitched." We compare screaming to singing and speaking, even across different languages. Screams have a unique vocal quality: roughness. The roughness refers to how fast sound changes in loudness. The rougher the sound, the stronger the response to the part of fear in our brains.
I think screams can be scary but it depends on how loud the scream is. Usually in horror movies, the girl screams then the murderer comes out. Screams are portrayed as a joke in "scary" horror movies.

It's natural to get scared when you hear a scream, not necessarily because it's a loud noise (although that is a reason) but more so why the people are screaming. You hear it and expect something bad to be happening/coming at you and you get ready
