Sarah Klein- Obama lobbies personally for Syria

Obama reaches out to Congress by putting the decision to launch military strikes on Syria into their hands. The President is reaching out individually to members of Congress (as opposed to lobbying), but has yet to reach the favor of the public.  On Tuesday, Obama will meet with the chairs of key Congressional national security committees.
Critics of the Obama administration have pointed out that Obama only extended the decision on Syrian missile strikes to Congress after he made it clear he was in favor of them.  Senators are currently working on resolutions, but passage in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives is more problematic. There are skeptics over the U.S. involvement in another war, as well as the degree to which the proposed limited strikes will be effective.

  1. I think that it's smart of Obama to personally reach out to the different members rather than the group as a whole because it allows him to give his point of view without as much dissent which then lets him get his point across better. It also makes sense for him to reach out once he was in favor of it because why would he do it while he was against it?

  2. I like how obama is not being like bush and being all yolo im starting a war and not thinking of the reprocissions. One of my favorite quotes is "all we have learned from history is that we dont learn from history", but maybe in this case we will be humans and not just bomb people for fun.

  3. I feel like it was a smart move on Obama's behalf to reach out to the members individually because it gives the illusion of a more personal connection and relationship between them.

  4. Reaching out to the members personally is a smart move, as it makes it seems as if there is a personal connection there, and like he is trying to make a personal appeal to them. Hopefully we won't end up the same situation as before.
