Trump's announced a state of emergency Friday after he failed to get Congress to pay $5.7 billion to "build the wall." Trump undermined himself stating he "didn't need" to declare the emergency. It could be argued, and it has, that this is an unconstitutional power grab. Since he was denied the money, Trump plans to fund the wall with money that was supposed to be used on military construction projects. It is uncertain if there will be enough votes in congress to counter Trumps veto if the state of emergency is countered. The issue will more than likely be solved in court as states like California have already said that they will sue the president.
Trumps power grab will dramatically change the relationship between the executive branch and Congress. In the past the state of emergency has been used in events like 911. By setting a different precedent a power that would usually be used in times of dire need will now be subjected manipulation. Another example of this in US history is Andrew Jackson's use of the veto that changed the power of the executive branch.
I guess it makes sense that Trump idolizes Andrew Jackson so much. Each course of action he's taken mirrors Jackson. It only makes sense he would push the limits of his executive power. Given the parallels, I wonder if a second Trail of tears is inevitable.
ReplyDeleteHonestly though. He is doing almost the same things that Jackson did. I wonder if the rest of the federal government recognize this.

It would be a tragedy if we were to do something like the trail of tears again
DeleteIt is appalling that the president has to bypass the popular will of the American people via using some legal loophole to grant himself the money needed for a wall that no one truly wants. The comparison of Trump to Jackson is rather telling of the role of Trump.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the statement about the money for the wall, and trump even said him doing this was unnecessary
DeleteThis is an abuse of executive power. I can't wait for this crook to be out of office.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any predictions on when this will be?
