Florida Student Arrested After Refuse to Say Pledge of Allegiance- Gracie Zytynski

This article written by Darran Simon apart of CNN News discusses a Florida student that was arrested for refusing to take part in the Pledge of Allegiance, causing a disturbance to the class. A substitute teacher attempted to force the student, who is black, to stand and when asked the student answered that he wouldn't because the flag of the country is racist. He then explained why the national anthem was offensive to black people. This connects to the first amendment which states that as a citizen we have freedom of press, petition, speech, religion, assembly. It also connects with the civil rights movement because during this time there were non-violent protest, but it was still called a disturbance, just as the student was called.

  1. This is really shocking! Personally, I don't usually stand and recite the pledge, but I don't get called out for it, nor do I get arrested for not doing so. This kid should be proud of standing up for what he believes in, as long as he is doing so in a respective and non-violent manner
