In Canda, indigenous people have been taken from their land, much like how the Native Americans here got booted from their land long ago. These people in Canada are known as the Algonquin, which have been seen in various parts of North America. They say that the tension between the government and this native tribal group has gone down, however, both parties agree that the issue needs to be discussed. Mr. Trudeau has had a hard time trying to meet and find a common ground on this issue. Canada is a very vast area of space as we know, and its inhabitants are nothing compared to the amount of people living in the United States. One example the tribe has made is that they want 8.9 million of Ottawa land shed, which is a LOT of land. This dispute between the government and Algonquins started in 1800, and has continued to this day. Currently they are trying to work things out keeping in mind the fairness and the sympathetic values of the tribes.
This relates to APUSH because like the Trail of Tears, the natives were booted off their land, however at that point in America, they were unable to fight back. Now, the drive in Canada is able to resist and they are still trying to get back their due land. This is written to give hope and bring awareness.

I can't believe that this has been going since 1800. it's also interesting how history is constantly repeating itself
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment above. It is sad to see the history from the 1800s repeating, as the Trail of Tears is something we now look upon as "unfathomable".
ReplyDeleteIt's terrible that these people have had to deal with this issue for a numerous amount of years. I hope that they settle things out soon to prevent further tensions.
ReplyDeleteIt is awful that it has been centuries since the start of these issues and they are still not resolved. In Canada and the United States horrid treatment of Native Americans continue.
