Student walkout in New Jersey high school - Amy Mills

Students walked out on Monday due to a viral Snapchat video of an English teacher scolding three students for speaking Spanish and telling them to "speak American." "They're not fighting for your right to speak Spanish, they're fighting for your right to speak American." "We were speaking... in Spanish because that's how we feel more comfortable," said student Vianery Cabrera. The teacher (who teaches English but was substituting for an algebra class) then began yelling and ranting about speaking English in the classroom. "I laughed, because, first of all, that's not a language," Vianery said. "I have the right to speak Spanish. I have the right to speak English. I have the right to speak whatever language I speak, and that's my right. There's no law that says that I should or must speak English." Almost 100 students walked out of the school in protest on Monday, even after the principal said that they would be disciplined. After someone pulled a fire alarm, all of the school's 1,110 students walked out at around 11 a.m. "She should be fired," Vianery said. "I don't think it's fair."

This article was written by Cristian Benavides at NBC news on Monday, October 16th. This article informs the public about current situations in American schools and Hispanic discrimination in certain cases. In my opinion, the teacher shouldn't have scolded people for speaking the language they felt most comfortable talking in. In other news, American isn't a language!

Wow this is pretty shocking considering teachers are supposed to foster and support students. I also laughed at "speak American", being an English teacher you'd think they would know that's not a language. They have every right to speak in Spanish. The other teachers should join in and protect them and their rights. Students are told to respect their teachers, so why aren't some teachers respecting their students? It's a two way street.

  2. The teacher should be fired for making this choice. Its not their right to tell another student to speak English. That teacher is cruel and this violates amendment 1. The students have the right to do as they please (freedom of speech)

  3. I completely agree with you. Also, Spanish is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the United states other than english. You would expect the teacher to be used to students speaking it by now, especially if they are a english teacher!

  4. I agree that the teacher should be fired. This is why things like Hispanic Heritage month exist, so that people can have a better understanding of other cultures and not be blunt and racist as this teacher was. It's also funny that an English teacher told them to speak American instead of English.
