In today’s media, it is hard to find celebrities who are celebrated for their brains as opposed to their looks or talent. Tom Hanks is known for being a very well known and very talented actor who has played large roles in many movies. Today, though, he is recognized for his awareness for history. He has just received the “Records of Achievement” award by the National Archives foundation for being a great advocate for and promoting historical knowledge. He tries to spread awareness through his fame about how many of our concerns and questions can be answered through cracking open a book and starting a conversation.
We always say in school that we have to remember the past in order to not make the same mistakes in the future, but many adults forget this. If you’re not in a classroom it is very easy to ignore our past and dream about the future. It is important for influential figures, like Tom Hanks, to step out and make sure our society is still aware of what is going on because they have the loudest voice.
