The offending ad was a 3-second GIF hawking Dove body wash that was posted Friday to the brand's Facebook page. It was taken down Saturday.
CNNMoney reviewed a copy of the GIF. Introduced with the line "Ready for a Dove Shower?" it shows a looping image of a black woman removing a dark brown t-shirt to reveal a white woman. She then removes her beige t-shirt to show a third woman.

Okay, as you surely know by know, I am all for protecting black women. (I love black women! So powerful!) But this seems like a stretch to me. The ad obviously wasn't meant to offend. I'm not saying Dove should not be held responsible, as they have upset people; but really? I feel a three second GIF should not be a top priority at the moment. There are so many things going on right now that are outwardly racist. In the process of calling these things out, we've started throwing accusations around. This is the kind of thing that makes the social justice movement look like (frankly, pardon my language) stereotypical liberal bullshit.

ReplyDeleteI love standing up for colored students and you're right, this is bullshit. We need to know that everybody isn't out to get us. I pray that Jesus can help us get through these evil thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI could never truly see this from the perspective from a black person because duh I'm asian, but I feel like this ad was offensive and the way that they showed the black woman taking off her shirt to reveal a white woman. However, I agree with you that there are many more things that are outwardly racist and should be dealt with more than a 3-second ad.
ReplyDeleteI think it was supposed to be a quirky transition but you never know.
Deletei think Dove was in the wrong! It shouldnt have ever happened because it was very offensive!!!
ReplyDeleteNot only was it offensive but I feel like the whole making of that ad is unnecessary. What do the 3 women have to do with dove and taking a shower? Maybe I'm just a little slow...
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that the people at Dove are racists or were intentionally acting that way, but I find it incredibly funny that this ad most likely went through so many people before it was released. Did no one think that MAYBE it was going to be offensive? Please, Dove, do some historical research next time. Also, I don't even get what this ad is trying to say about their product. It's just a hot mess.
