Extremely devastating wildfires have been ripping through northern California for the past few days. They have destroyed 1,500 homes and businesses, and 20,000 people have had to evacuate from 8 counties. The wind was over 50 miles per hour and the lack of humidity have helped accelerate the fire across several areas In fact, the fire swept across 20,000 miles in 12 hours. The damage to the wine industry in Napa and Sonoma are expected to be significant blow the the tourist economy. Hundreds of people evacuated to designated shelters have had to evacuate as fire have threatened to destroy the shelters themselves. One woman that was being interviewed in a shelter said "You caught us just in time. We're being evacuated again." A curfew has been enacted to areas that have been evacuated to help stop looting, and cut down on crime. Witnesses say "People are running relights, there is chaos ensuing." In conclusion, over 8 million acres of land have burned in 4 different states so far, and the damage will be huge.
This article was written to inform the public of the massive destruction happening in the Northern California area. This article does mention that the fire has caused a stir politically over the connection to climate change and forest management. I believe this article sheds light on a very important issue our current president isn't taking seriously. Climate change is a huge issue, and the United States and other countries can't take any more natural disasters. New laws and practices need to be created to help stop the effects of climate change.
