Catalonia Independence
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/22/spain-calls-on-catalans-to-respect-decision-to-impose-direct-rule

The Catalonia region of Spain is fighting for political independence and Spain's Prime Minister is not happy about it.  Mariano Rajoy, Spain's Prime Minister, is threatening the removal of Catalan leaders and imposing direct Madrid rule. The people of Catalonia are angered by this.  The regional president, Carles Puigdemont, described this act as the worst attack on Catalonia's institution since General Franco's dictatorship. Puigdemont is planning to make a self-determined declaration of independence. The Catalan government responded and said they will fight very hard to defend Catalonia's democratically elected institutions. Even if they draw back from a declaration, many Catalans may decide to not take orders from Madrid and it could get dangerous and violent. Spain's reaction to this has been firm and blunt, and they want to keep the region of Catalonia a part of their country.
This current event relates to United States history because the region of Catalonia will do whatever they can to gain their independence, like how the Americans did in the American Revolution. Even though there is not a war going on in Spain, there are still many protests occurring by the Catalonians demanding to have their own government. If Catalonia gains their independence it will be a major point in history for them and the people will celebrate that day forever, like how Americans celebrate the Fourth of July.

  1. It is crazy that government issues are still major problems in our advanced world. This is similar to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland feud that has been going on for centuries. Some of Northern Ireland wants to become its own country, while other parts are dependent on the UK.

  2. I agree. These feuds are popping up a lot more than they should and these issues should be resolved.
