Summary: The School Board in Biloxi, Mississippi decided this week to remove "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, off of the school reading list. The decision came after complaints came in from parents about the use of the n-word. The board has yet to comment. On the school's website, questions they've chosen to focus on go something like this: "Is there a difference between tradition and ignorance?" Actor Nick Orsini on the hit TV comedy, Black-ish, tweeted out this on the issue:
if to kill a mockingbird makes you uncomfortable you should probably be reading to kill a mockingbird.
Position: The book To Kill a Mockingbird provides a helpful insight on the issue of racial inequality during the 1900's in the south. If we don't learn about our predecessor's mistakes, we might make the same ones over again.
And when history repeats itself, it's usually pretty ugly.
This is crazy. I agree that To Kill a Mockingbird is an important part of history to teach and parents are too sensitive to these issues.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Klark, to kill a mockingbird is a good book and i think everyone should read if they get a chance

ReplyDeleteThe point of "To Kill A Mockingbird" is to MAKE THE READER UNCOMFORTABLE. Uncomfortable with the fact individuals had the audacity and ability to act in such a way, and have them reflect on current events.
ReplyDeleteI think ''To Kill a Mockingbird'' shouldn't be removed from schools because its important to history. If kids parents have a problem than just don't allow kids to read the book but they will just miss a part of history but it'll be the parents fault and not the schools.
ReplyDelete"To Kill and Mockingbird" is an amazing book. Removing the book from a school district won't change the history. People need to stop being so sensitive.
ReplyDeleteThis book is incredibly important and it deserves to be read by everyone, especially youths. You are completely correct in stating that if we don't learn about and understand our past we will repeat the same mistakes.
ReplyDeleteTKAMn is such a phenomenal book and is one of my favorites to this day, and its important to keep it in the school system to educate people of society and literature in the past.
ReplyDelete"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a great book and teaches children more about our history. I think it's crazy that they pulled it from the reading list because it feels like they're trying to shelter the kids...
