1983 Cold Case
In 1983, 23 year old Timothy Coggins was brutally murdered what is thought to be a hate crime. The case remained cold with no leads for nearly 34 years, until just recently when five arrests were made following the reveal of new evidence. Coggins’ family did not give up hope that justice would be served, and they are “eternally grateful” that the police department did not give up on the case. Timothy was brutally murdered and his body was left abandoned. The case eventually went cold, as there were no leads or suspects. In March of this year, the authorities received new information and decided to reopen the case. The sheriff reported, "He was not 100% perfect, but you know what? He was the victim of a murder, and he deserves justice just like everybody else does”. Although arrests have been made, the motive and many details of the crime have yet to be uncovered. The Sheriff worries that “divulging too much information may hamper the prosecution”. He has accused the suspects in custody of witness intimidation and the threatening of witnesses for years. He has great confidence in the case. Whether or not the convicted with suffer the death penalty is yet to be determined.
This article, written by Eliott C. McLaughlin, was updated earlier today around five in the afternoon. It is informing the public of the persistence of the justice system. It’s amazing to see how after 34 years after the crime was committed, they are closer to prosecution than ever before. A case stone cold for over 30 years, now has surfacing evidence from those who were once afraid to speak up. His family knew this day would come, and it’s amazing they finally have closure.
