The leaders of China gather this week for their 19th National Congress of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party). This meeting in particular will determine how the Chinese government stands on, among other issues, internet censorship. The CCP have been seen recently leaning towards more censorship, specifically in the last 12 months. This influence takes the form of new laws and regulations that target areas of online expression, in topics now deemed intolerable. In the past, the CCP has been known to "take drastic measures to suppress ideas it considers hostile." They even refused to let "Winnie the Pooh" air when the character came to be compared to president, Xi Jinping. This brings to light a question we still can't completely answer: can you suppress a hub of ideas as unique and widespread as the internet?
