California Inmates Help Battle Raging Wildfires
According to a report written on October 13th, the inmates from the California state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation provide their service to the forests in the community, in exchange for "good behavior" hours. A mass majority of the minimum-security inmates work in partnership with the rewarding program. These participants are not only helping the community, by rebuilding its forests and its many habitats, but they are also taught life lessons. An inmate states that he "has learned discipline and leadership," through this interactive program. Over 4,000 inmates are apart of the conservation program and nearly all of them say that they have benefited tremendously.

The inmates are given the opportunity to help out their community and earn an early release, all while doing something that allows them to grow as human beings. Although the prison system does have its flaws, this article does a great job at showcasing its efforts to involve a successful engagement with the community.

Your comment about inmates given the opportunity to help out their community and earn an early release, all while doing something that allows them to grow as human beings is very heart warming. Is shows that even though someone made a terrible decision in their life there still is possibility for growth, change, and improvement.
ReplyDeletePeople say that others don’t change but after reading this I believe that people can change with time. Doing what they did shows good morals and I’m glad they’re trying to turn their lives around.
ReplyDeleteI love this program. There have been studies in other countries about how their prison systems have affected crime rates and most of them show a rehab-like system resulting in a safer community. Hopefully actions like this will have a similar outcome.
