Caroline Carter-toxic substances spread by Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey has brought much damage to the Houston area so far, but there is still more to be discovered. The storm gathered up dioxins and heavy metals like mercury from petrochemical operations and waste sites near the Port of Houston and deposited them in the waters nearby, creating a layer of toxins in the riverbeds. While this is negative in that it is dangerous to the environment, it can also help scientists learn more about Harvey. This will help city officials to plan for future hurricanes.

This strikes me as being similar to what the framers of the Constitution had in mind when they created a system for amending the Constitution. They learned from their mistakes with the Articles of Confederation (in this case Hurricane Harvey) and adjusted their various laws and rules to what could happen in the future, much like how Houston officials are adjusting their natural disaster plans to what could possibly happen in the coming years.

  1. I think this is actually good because scientist might have a way of making natural disasters like these less intense.

  2. I wrote a blog about this article also and I think that these studies will helps us learn more about Hurricanes and help us lessen the damage that they cause in the future.

  3. I think it is good that we are learning more and that we can now plan better. The question is though how will the people be affected by the deposited toxins? I would hope that the country would prevent this from ever happening again.
