12 days later | Mica Stout

According to reporter Julia Kelleher, 12 days after hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico has some electricity, and schools aren't in great shape. Only 5% of the population has electricity, 41% safe drinkable water, and about half of the grocery stores are operating. As for the children, students specifically, schools open August 14, but the damage of Maria is so great that officials don't see it opening back up until October 16. FEMA has sent 1 million meals, and liters of water on Saturday, helping tremendously with the people who cannot make their way to a store. On top of all the hardships, our very own president has been criticizing the leadership of mayor Carmen Cruz saying that Puerto Rico wants everything done for them, but it should be a community effort.

Every hurricane that has occurred so far has left incredible damage to the homes and environment of each place. The need for supplies in high and the added pressure of get it fixed by ___ time isn't helping. There so far hasn't been a way to prevent such disaster from happening, so the best thing to do is be patient and work together to restore. Hurricane Katrina back in 2005 was hard hitting, literally, it killed over 1500, people leaving so much damage.

I could never imagine what a hurricane is like, and hopefully will not be experiencing one any time soon. With Puerto Rico's gradual recovery, Trump's added criticism won't help. I think that the things said by him aren't going to help anything, and it creates this hatred from country to country, leading to no one liking America. I fell like there's a better approach to what's already being done, I haven't thought of what that is, I just know there's a simpler way.

  1. I also wrote about this topic, and it is so incredibly sad. I hope Puerto Rico receives more help to allow them to recover from Hurricane Maria quicker.

  2. While Trump is golfing on his own hotel property, people are starving. Not to mention that it's US Territory so they're our people. A cruise ship straying off course to help these people is making more of an impact then one of the most powerful world leaders.

  3. Hurricane Maria made landfall quite a while ago, and it is hard to keep hearing about the struggle there after so long.

    1. It's crazy to read all these articles about different hurricanes THIS YEAR. I hope the families recover and they get all the help needed.
