Summary - A tornado ripped through Hattiesburg, Mississippi, killing at least 4 people and injuring many more. 2 of the victims of the storm were in a trailer park. The tornado was a category 3, with wind speeds up to 165 mph. The tornado also caused extensive damage, ripping of the roofs of numerous buildings, including the local Salvation Army. In some areas there was flooding and water damage in buildings and homes due to the lack of roofs. Many of the streets are blocked with trees, fallen telephone poles and power lines that had been ripped up by the winds. Authorities said debris clean up would take at least a week and encouraged people to stay at home.
Analysis - This article was by Doug Stanglin. Though he probably doesn't live in the area, his article was very factual and included quotes and tweets from officials and residents. The article was writing very soon after the tornado occurred so some facts such as the exact number of fatalities and injuries as well as how extensive the damage was could possibly not be completely accurate. I had already known of the tornado but not that 4 people had died and how destructive it was. The article was written to educate people on the disaster that had occurred. It is times like these that we can see how authorities will act and help with emergencies. I think we can see here that a better warning system would be helpful in preventing deaths.
