It seems Trump is inspirational to other in his faction of rich, white, TV host, old guys. Kevin O'Leary of Shark Tank announced he will be running against Justin Trudeau for the position of Canadian Prime Minister in Canada's next election.
If you've ever watched even 5 minutes of Shark Tank, you know that Kevin O'Leary isn't exactly diplomatic. I highly doubt that he will be a good leader. He refers to Justin Trudeau as "Bambi" , mocking his attempts at international peace. He has a long history of saying whatever comes to his mind.
Despite all of this, the issue here isn't really with Kevin O'Leary at all. Its with the results of America's recent election. Obama once (accurately) described Trump as a "fundamentally unserious candidate". Trump's victory seems to have inspired other ludicrous people to run for head of state of their respective countries. This hellacious domino effect that Trump's presidency has set in motion a thought in the mind of the wildly wealthy or famous that they can run for political office just by virtue of fame and shock value. If this idea continues to spread, geopolitics will turn into a who's-who covered by tabloids. Political office, meant to connect the people of a nation to power, will become the newest fad for a celebrity to have, like a purse sized dog, or a Kardashian spouse.
While Kevin and TheDonald do not have the same platform, (Kevin seems to be more socially liberal), I think that the trend of celebrity politics is very detrimental and can get out of hand very fast. We as a global community need to show our disdain for celebrities turned to politics. We need real politicians who have devoted their lives to public service, and not celebrities who have turned to running for office as a whim.
