Mulan Live-Action Film's Lead Role Hunt

Angelica Salazar 1st period

This article goes and begins to state the loving film Mulan and its new live-action version. This news astounds Disney lovers as they get excited to reveal who will be playing the lead roles. Disney has always been known as a somewhat "racist" kind of company due to all the successful movies based upon white women. So, after hearing rumors about the lead role of this film intended to be a white male, Mulan-lovers were angered and needed an explanation, but after further investigation, Vanity Fair was then told that the role would be given to a Chinese woman as the film calls for.

Even though Disney can be known for its so-called racism, the general topic of being racist and racism in general still circles around society. After the overwhelming protests of Black Lives Matter upon several unfair shootings, it is evident that this is still occurring. History will always repeat itself but why continue? There needs to be an end to the unfair treatment among humans.

  1. White washing in the film industry is astounding and shows no signs of slowing down. Constantly only starring white people in roles teaches young children of color that they are unimportant- and are better off serving as secondary characters. The casting of whites for an wide fully known CHINESE story is a bold statement by Disney- of their believe that whites are more marketable than minorities. (proving their superiority)

  2. Minorities are continually excluded from the film industry. Had they actually cast a white male as the lead of Mulan, they would have been giving a blatant show of whitewashing as well as gender bias. Many very popular movies feature white actors playing racial minorities, and this is not okay. The issue doesn't stop there, though. Transgender characters are generally played by popular cisgender actors (such as Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl) when they are portrayed at all. Minorities don't deserve to be ignored in film, or replaced. Very few western films feature Chinese performers, but I am glad that this one will.
