In Fairway, Kansas, parents are taking more caution for their children's safety in sports when it comes to concussions. Concussions are greatly increasing, based on a new report from Blue Cross Blue Shield. Scientists are using "accelerometers", what's in cell phones to tell which way is up, in helmets in order to cut down on concussions and reduce the severity of a blow to the head. A new helmet called the "SeudoSkull" is designed to spread the energy from the impact across the body instead of the full force being applied to the skull, causing a concussion. The SeudoSkull helmet is still testing at the University of Kansas, but initial results are good.
I find that this technology will greatly help the brains of young children, and that it's important that there are preventative measures for concussions, considering how damaging they can be without us knowing, as the author mentions. In this current day and age, football and similar physical contact sports are praised and idolized, with little discussion of the negative ramifications. Often, talk about concussions caused by football is a controversial topic of discussion. (See the film Concussion starring Will Smith) But I think that this helmet is a great form of compromise, because it allows the players to continue playing but with considerably less risk. This article is directed towards anyone who is associated with the sport of football. This can be synthesized to how the Native Americans were killed by our diseases and we didn't know.

I'm so glad to hear that this invention has progressed. Something similar to this was made a few years ago, but the technology was proven faulty and users were just as susceptible to being concussed. This is important; contact sports are a huge part of our culture and keeping the players as safe as possible can put the minds of their loved ones at ease. -Olivia Moretta
