Linnea Soderlund: Shailene Woodley Arrested at Dakota Access Pipeline Protest

Summary: This article by Sarah Larimer, we hear a story about a celebrity's involvement in politics. In light of today, Columbus Day, the American government has displayed little to no progress when it comes to respecting our indigenous people and their land. The U.S. Army Corps recently approved the construction of a crude oil pipeline dangerously near the Missouri River in close proximity to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The tribe and supporters have argued this action for fear of destruction of sacred land and harm to their main water source. At a riot protesting these actions, famous actress, Shailene Woodley, along with dozens of other advocate were arrested at the event.

Analysis: This event and its publicity throughout the social media world will hopefully bring light to this issue, as it sadly depicts many problems regarding the government's poor treatment of the native people spanning centuries. I think that this is especially ironic, considering it is Columbus Day, or as some cities are now calling it, "Indigenous Peoples Day".

Synthesis: This could be tied to the extreme poor treatment of the natives exemplified by the infamous Trail of Tears, as well as how the government handles rebellious gatherings as they did during the Whiskey Rebellion.

  1. This event will hopefully bring some attention to the problems occurring with the natives, people who most don't really think about and consider often. This publicity is crucial for the spread of the news and makes change more likely.
