Lauren Cargill - More Cities Celebrating 'Indigenous Peoples Day' In Order to Abolish Columbus Day

Summary: Columbus Day has been celebrated in America for 81 years now but this year cities like   Portland, Oregon and Albuquerque, New Mexico are instead celebrating Indigenous                       Peoples Day in honor of the people who were here before Columbus showed up. The first                   city to make this change was Minneapolis which was soon followed by Seattle. Now, nine           cities across the US no longer celebrate Columbus Day. They made this change after                           being pushed by Native Americans for years. They feel that a day should not be set aside                   for a person that started what ended up almost wiping out the Native American                                   population. They hope that eventually all of America will make this change but for now,                     its just these nine with  Oklahoma City on the way.

Analysis: I think that its great for the Native Americans to have a specific holiday just for them. Considering the mistreatment that they went through when America was first colonized by the Europeans. I personally don't see the harm in replacing Columbus day, but since so many people seem to be upset about it I think that making Indigenous Peoples Day October 11th is a good solution. This could be compared to Harriet Tubman replacing Andrew Jackson on the twenty dollar bill because they are both examples of things being changed to acknowledge and celebrate all different races.

  1. I totally agree with you because people unaware of the real historical facts, overlook the importance of honor the Native Americans.

  2. Yeah, I agree. I think the least we could do to somewhat repay, or even acknowledge the plight of the Native Americans is a stupid holiday.

  3. I also agree. I think Native Americans are very under appreciated and need some sort of recognition for how much they helped the Europeans as they came over. We badly mistreated them and they taught us a lot.
