Hannah Howell- Flint Faces A Shigellosis Breakout

Summary: This is article is focusing on the recent bacterial outbreak in Flint, Michigan. This is not the the first serious bacterial outbreak in Flint. They had previously dealing with a water crisis that had lasted for more than two years. Many people in Flint are still afraid of the water and only use filtered or bottled water and some don't shower frequently and are scared to wash their hands. The new bacteria is the Shigella bacteria which causes Shigellosis. Shigellosis causes fever, abdominal pain, and/or diarrhea. It is spread when people don't wash their hands and that is why it is so prevalent in this part of Michigan.

Analysis/Synthesis: This is an awful situation, not only because of the harmful bacteria, but because these people are afraid of the very thing that will protect them from it: water. Hot water kills bacteria but the citizens of Flint think that hot water will mess up their filters. Hopefully they figure out a way to stay hygienic and keep their filtered water at the same time. That is the only was they will stay safe from the Shigello bacteria. This event reminds of the Ebola epidemic because it was transmitted through human contact.
