Gracie Darlington: Historic black school in Virginia vandalized with racist messages

Ashburn Colored School opened in 1892, giving black children in Virginia a chance to receive an education in a time of intense segregation. For the past two years, local students have been restoring the single-roomed schoolhouse into an educational museum. Last Saturday, these children received a devastating blow upon discovering that the schoolhouse had been vandalized with hateful, racist messages. Vandals spray painted swastikas, genitals, "white power", and other derogatory symbols. The vandals have yet to be discovered, and authorities are offering up to $1000 for information regarding those involved in the crime.
This article was written in order to inform its reader about yet another hate crime toward the African American community. Decades ago, white kids would tease and laugh at the black children who attended the school, and today, we are seeing that same racism applied to the same school. This article highlights how twisted and hurtful these crimes are, and hopefully causes the reader to want to take action. This can synthesize back to the racist acts that white people committed when the Brown V. Board of Education case declared segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional.
