This weekend in Virginia a historic school for African Americans was vandalized by hateful members of the community. The Ashburn Colored School is a small educational institution that
gave black students a chance to get a good education during the dark period of segregation. Over the past few years steps by the community in the surrounding area have been taken to turn the historic school into a museum so that the public can learn about its significant role in history. The people who chose to spray paint disrespectful and racist comments and images on the schoolhouse have hurt their community and delayed the project of the school being turned into a museum.
This article was written by Max Blau from CNN in order to share the problem with racism our nation has to this day. It is often thought by the public that these problems have been solved for decades but when racist acts such as this occur we are proved very wrong. This article is trying to convey the fact that we must still make a conscious effort to ensure that everyone in our community is treated equally and with respect. This vandalization can be tied back to the many racist activities conducted by white people toward the African American community in the 1950s and 1960s. Homes in the black community were often vandalized with derogatory terms similar to what was written on the school just a day or two ago, and the very students that attended the Ashburn Colored School were discriminated against for getting an education. The citizens of our nation need to work together to stop future racist acts from happening.

That is so sad that people are doing that to this school, and I really hope something can be done to prevent it from recurring in the future. I find it very interesting and I love how they are turning the school into something that people can admire and remember the significant role it played in the area's history. I just hope that this can continue to be a project that they work on, regardless of the racist actions committed.
