SUMMARY:
Nestlé, a Switzerland transnational food and drink company, has recalled its Drumstick ice cream cone after finding Listeria in the equipment used to make the product. The newly packaged Drumsticks had entered stores between August 31 and September 17. While all Drumsticks are being recalled, there are only a few that have been tested positive so far. Listeria is a very dangerous bacteria that can be deadly to those with weak immune systems. However, there have been no reports of sickness or actual Listeria in Nestle's ice cream based on recent investigation. They also claim that this situation is in no way similar to the Blue Bell outbreak of Listeria in the past year. Blue Bell had witnessed and gone through the death of 3 Kansas citizens and the infection of 10. Nestle also clearly informs us that it was the equipment (not the ice cream) that was tested positive in only one of their facilities, hopefully proving that the situation will not follow in Blue Bell's footsteps.
ANALYSIS:
Before reading this article, I had been informed of the Listeria outbreak that occurred at the Blue Bell creamery. I had known it to be very dangerous and scary for those who had eaten Blue Bell recently and those with weak immune systems! So, hearing about this same problem potentially recurring, I am hoping that there is a way that we can prevent it from furthering or repeating this sad and potentially fatal cycle in the future. We need to do something about Listeria, whether its finding a cure or making sure that there is no chance of exposing it to the machines and ice cream in the future. This problem also calls into question how sanitary factories and work places are, and how likely they are to pick up diseases such as Listeria. I think that our government and America in general needs to make this dilemma a priority and work there hardest to stop it!

I agree, it is definitely an issue and also does call into question whether the health code of factories needs to be raised. As we discover more and more everyday through new technologies, I think health codes and regulations of factories should reflect and keep up with that.
ReplyDeleteThe government has surprisingly low standards for food and quality control. Some of the fillers and processed ingredients that our food is full of are not even legal in a lot of other countries because of how poisonous they really are. As a person with a weakened immune system, I find the FDA incompetent. That is why I think people should eat clean, instead of all of this processed food that is poisonous and contaminated.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad! This worries me that products coming from other companies will follow the same path. I hope this event reminds all companies to be extra cautious with producing safe products to consume.
ReplyDeleteYou'd think that after the big Blue Bell scare that big names in the dairy industry would tighten up their act to prevent similar mistakes. This is scary!! There shouldn't be fear associated with something as -seemingly- harmless as an ice cream cone. -Olivia Moretta
