Summary: Fresh Kills, a landfill in Staten Island, New York, is going to be turned from the world’s largest garbage dump into a beautiful park three times the size of Central Park. It is going to be the largest landfill turned park project that has been undertaken in the world. Once a dumpsite for all of New York City, giving Staten Island a bad rep, it is going to be a beautiful park full of nature, something that New York is known for lacking. Not only will this change be good for the people of Staten Island, but also for the wildlife. When it was a landfill it was home only to seagulls who ate the trash and probably rats and other varmints. Now it will be home to over two hundred species of birds and much wildlife. Although the park is not set to be completely finished until 2035, seven hundred acres will open to the public this month.
Analysis/Synthesis: This article is depicting a positive thing that the people of New York are doing from the environment, turning a rotting trash dump into a park that is beneficial to the animals, the people, and the Earth. Also, because New York City is so largely populated it is mostly concrete and not much greenery, so this will be a great addition to NYC because it will add another park that people can go to and enjoy experiencing nature. This article is uplifting because it tells of something not so great evolving into something beautiful that is positive for all. This story will hopefully impact others and inspire more places in the US to get rid of our landfills that are not good for the Earth and leave a positive footprint on the environment around us. Another way to reduce the landfills would be to reduce our garbage by reusing things such as water bottles, reducing the amount of waste per capita, and recycling everything that we can. In a way this being the world’s largest landfill goes back to how New York slowly surpassed all of the other 13 original colonies, even Philadelphia and Boston by 1790, even though much of the city was burned to the ground during the American Revolution. It grew so much because, especially with the opening of the Erie Canal it became the primary trading center for America, full of wealth and vibrance. With all of the multinational immigrants that started pouring in through New York City, it is easy to understand how it became so compact and populated, and produced so much waste.
