WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 5TH BLOG: Ava Noble
Summary:
In 2012, Callen Stone Grace, shot himself accidentally with a gun he thought was broken. His mother, Don Grace, was primarily furious when she was asked to donate his organs. She soon saw a visual of her deceased son saying, "Momma, what would I do? This is not about you." She changed her mind. Joe Hansen received Callen's heart four years ago, and he expresses his joy saying, "Best I've felt in all my life." When Hansen first got the transplant, they did not meet because they both needed some healing time. However, at the four-year anniversary of her son's heart transplanted in Hansen, they met joyfully on a Friday afternoon at Nebraska Medicine. Hansen showed that Callen's picture is seen everyday when he opens his wallet. He says they converse often, and they are both happy together. Finally, Don Grace got the opportunity to listen to her son's heartbeat in Joe Hansen. "It's so peaceful," she says. Both Don and Joe has a peaceful day, exchanging positive thoughts and memories.
Analysis/Synthesis:
I believe this story was not written for a negative effect. I think it is to show the positive effects off what donating your organs can make. This article could be produced for a variety of different audiences. CNN published the story, sending positive messages to reach out to families who could be dealing with a similar situations. This story touched my heart in a very special way because I can only imagine how horrible this mom felt when her son first passed away. I am sure there is not a day where she wakes up not thinking about her son. However, she must feel so enriched to know that her son is still living but in someone else's body. The thought of saving someone's life must make her so proud. Although in past historical events they did not have technology to do heart transplants, there were many cases where people died to save another person's life. I hope after reading this, people will donate their organs, showing how saving someone's life will impact the world.

ReplyDeleteYeah it's pretty cool but like... that's kind of creepy. Haha I'm not trying to be a buzzkill., Just saying...
ReplyDeletei agree that this was written to be positive. the death of your own child can be so awful, but knowing that part of him saved somebody else gives you such a great feeling.
ReplyDeleteLife is such a valuable thing, but sadly in this scenario it meant taking one life to save another. I also agree that this was a positive story because the young boy now has a full life ahead of him.
ReplyDeleteIf this were my kid, I would feel great pleasure to know my own son saved another man's life. I will always want to be an organ donor, and I hope this story shows others what being an organ donor can do for people.
