Seanelle Higgins: Ancient Bones Found on Aegean Sea Floor

Summary:
This article is about a recent discovery made on the floor of the Aegean Sea. The bones are remenants from a ship wreck dating back to about two millenia. This is a major scientific discovery because these bones are the first bones to be found from the era of DNA sequencing. Archaeologists believe that these bones are still there "against all odds". Bones this old would have certainly been washed away, but they seem to think that the bones were buried as soon as the ship wrecked. Some of the bones were actually brought to the surface for further observation. The archaeology team hopes they can use the DNA to determine the gender, ethnicity, eye color, and geographic origin. These bones actually come from what is believed to be the largest ancient ship wreck ever discovered. The ship is believed to be an anciet Greek cargo ship. Scientists have already recovered many valuable items from the wreck and hope to discover more like the bones in the near future.

Analysis:
I do believe that this is a majore scientific breakthrough. If the DNA of this individual is considerably important, it could actually allow us to rewrite history or even change their beliefs on what the ship is. I think that it's interesting how they can use 2,000 year old DNA in order to determine the gender, ethnicity,  and even eye color of the individual. I do hope that archeologist discover something important or helpful to scientific development.

Synthesis:
This reminds me of the Dokos shipwreck, the oldest ship wreck discovered in the world. Lots of pottery and cultural artifacts were discovered via this wreck.

  1. I think it's amazing how these bones have been recovered after so long. I really do hope that the DNA found can give us some major insight on things we don't know about.

  2. I wonder how they discovered those bones at the bottom of the Aegean Sea. However they came upon them, it's mindboggling that we have come to the technology that can calculate all of this information from these ancient bones. It makes me think about the inventions to come and their capabilities that will further our knowledge on the world.
