Mackenzie Bessner- Good and Bad News for Animal Kingdom
There is some good and bad news from the animal kingdom. The good news is that the giant panda is no longer an endangered species! The population has rose 17% from 2004 to 2014 leading it out of the red zone. WWF Director, General Marco Lambertini quoted, "The recovery of the panda shows that when science, political will and engagement of ,local communities come together, we can save wildlife and also improve biodiversity."
The bad news is that the eastern gorilla is critically endangered. Because of the hunt of eastern gorillas, the population has declined by more than 70% in the past 20 years. The population is actually less than 5,000 which means they are critically endangered.
This has reminded me of the past when the pandas were the main focal point since the 1970's. All of the high-profile campaigns were trying to recover the endangered species. Also, the eastern gorilla has become more and more endangered since the 1990's which is really heartbreaking. Gorillas have been mainly affected by human activities which I think is even worse because we have a choice not to hurt them but people still do. They are still living, breathing creatures just like us and they do not deserve to be poached or killed for trade in any way.

This is very sad. I read in a different article that the Giant Panda has actually caused the extinction of other endangered animals, because they are really high maintenance to protect due to the fact they only mate 3 day a year. Whilst people focus on the Panda unfortunately other species have lacked attention and have gone extinct.
