Devyn Lemack-Large Percentage of Elephants in Africa are Gone

Summary
Lately, all across the African continent, elephants have been disappearing. Where they have gone you may be wondering? People have been illegally killing animals for their own good. These people want the tusks of elephants just so they can sell it to get thousands of dollars, even though it's illegal in most countries. Researchers have flown across Africa in look for the elephants, shocked to see that almost 1/3 of them are gone. If these people do not stop killing these animals, the population could be extinct in less than a decade. Luckily, some elephants know the places where other elephants get poached, so they try to stay away from those spots.

Analysis/Synthesis
This topic is from CNN student news and i know that they post every day about current events, but this one stuck out to me because of my love for animals. I believe this story was written to let the world know what is going on with our wild life. This has a negative influence on the audience because it shows us how poorly the animals are being treated, and it's all our fault! These poor animals getting killed, just so people can get money, it's awful! Before reading this, i haven't heard of this topic very much, so i believe it was released so that more people can know about it and try to get the poaching to stop. Not only is saving the elephants nice, but plants also depend on them to scatter their seeds as well as other animals rely on them for survival. This event can relate to history because people use to collect the tusks of elephants to make jewelry, piano keys, and art. Obviously this has been a problem for hundreds of years and it needs to come to a stop.

  1. how horrible that people, knowing that elephants are on the brink of extinction, would poach elephants for their own benefit. This is similar to when americans expanded westward, per manifest destiny, and killed off almost all of the native buffalo without a care simply for food, fur, etc. This devastated the once numerous buffalo and also put huge hinderances on the native american people (i believe the Cheyenne) who had relied on the buffalo as the basis of their lifestyle.

  2. People who use animals for their profit aren't realizing the impact it's having on our society. We will lose certain types of animals because of socieity's greed for income.

  3. People these days, killing innocent animals just for decorations. It's not okay to just kill something and the thing getting killed doesn't have a choice-- nobody cares what or how they feel. -Skyler Tepedino
