Isabella Bruner-- What lessons did we learn from Zika spraying?

Summary: This article is about the effects of the Zika spray affecting the bees in South Carolina. A Beekeeper Juanita Stanely is outraged because the spray killed all of her 3 million bees and she says "Stop. This is crazy. Its like using a sledgehammer to crack a peanut. The devastation that it has already caused is beyond comprehension. We cant live without these honeybees." Usually, officials spray around night time but, this night sprayed in the late afternoon when the bees were still out of their hives. Even though, Juanita has signs over her property not to spray, the officials did it from planes and aircraft's. Zika isn't active in South Carolina but, people were starting to get worried because 4 people in the state developed it through travel. But there were no active cases of mosquito's with the diseases what was the point? Why put effort into something that is not even there? Juanita doesn't see the point to that either. "Let's just go kill everything in case someone might get it? Where is the logic in that?"

Zika spraying kills millions of honeybees

Analysis: This article made in the U.S. News by Sandee LaMotte, September, 2,2016 talks about the out rage of beekeepers in South Carolina after the spraying for Zika. The transition of diseases through mosquitoes has become a fear not just in United States but, as a world as well. With making it difficult to get rid of them people are on the edge of their feet to keep their family and friends safe. But, where does the line stop? When is it too much to a point where its useless? This article shows the struggle for safety crossing over the line to basic human needs. Bees are very important to our world and how we function. They are the ones pollination the flowers helping plants grow, produce food,  and making our world more pleasant. This effects us over thinking about how we over react to certain situations can leave a devastating effect. If people will look at the basic structures of how are lives function, then we would be more mindful of what we do.

  1. I can understand the nationwide fear that is spreading right now, but I feel like people are going a little to the extreme. Reasonable precautions should be enough to keep everyone safe. But I feel that with the media and constant news coverage people are starting to freak themselves out. Killing bee's that have nothing to do with the matter could cause dangerous environmental repercussions. The population of bee's are already on decline, and we should do everything possible to reverse that.

  2. Bees are very important to our ecosystem and when something like this happens I don't know why people aren't more alarmed. There should be more precautions taken when using sprays that could affect insects valuable to nature.
