Jordyn Chapman- Minnesota Mall Attack
Summary: The article tells the information about the attack of nine people by a soldier of the Islamic state, who was later shot dead by a police officer. Witnesses and police officers stated the man was wearing a security company uniform and asked at least one person if they were Muslim before he initiated the attack. The stabbings happened in various locations inside the mall. The FBI are doing a further investigation on the attackers motives and are even calling it "a potential act of terrorism." It goes further to give the perspective of members of the Muslim and Somali communities who don't want the situation to be a cause for division within their community. They state that attacks like these have led to the compromise of their own cities. It presents the idea that the officer was a hero, the mayor of the city stating "He protected others from being injured and potentially loss of life. Clearly, a hero." The article concludes with summaries on two similar attack that happened in the nation on that same day both in New York and New Jersey.
Analysis: This article was created by Chandrika Narayan and Steve Visser (both journalists/news reporters at CNN) on September 18, 2016, which is significant to the fact that there are still attacks against people to this day. I knew nothing of attacks like these prior, but did hear of ISIS which led me to believe one of their people could have easily been involved. This article is for people in our country to keep them informed on the matter, and to watch out for suspicious behavior, trying to convey the point that not only are we affected by this, but the Somali and Muslim communities are as well. This makes it even more important because it calls for us to stay unified because if we don't recognize we are not the only victims, other people are having their communities divided by this group.
Synthesis- This article can be compared to the Boston Massacre in 1770. Just like the 9 people stabbed in Minnesota, the civilians that were killed or injured arose from tensions that were currently prominent in the colonies/states.

I just finished reading Lauren's article about the possible terrorist bombing in New York, and this is scary as well. The fact that it happened in what we consider a fairly safe place, a public mall, makes it even scarier.
ReplyDeleteThis connects to my article. I can't believe something so terrible happened in such an ordinary place, to such ordinary people.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this would happen in a public place. People shouldn't have to feel threatened all the time.
ReplyDeleteThis is a smart synthesis , I'm just traumatized on what the world has become.
