Jenna Pitre - "Creepy Clown Sightings in South Carolina Cause a Frenzy"

Summary: Over the course of the past two weeks, strange things have been taking place in Greenville, South Carolina. There have been many reported sightings of ominous clowns in the woods. Children have described events where the clowns have attempted to lure them into the woods with candy or money. Some adults have also claimed to have witnessed people dressed as clowns standing in the woods, knocking on doors, and standing in yards. People say they've heard the clowns making whispering and making strange noises, and others say they've seen them flashing green laser lights from the woods. Though it is believed this is not a threat, just simply a joke gone too far, police are taking precaution. There have been notices posted around the area telling parents to keep a close eye on their kids, telling children to avoid walking in the woods or being alone at night, and asking parents to keep their children inside their houses after 10pm.

Analysis/Synthesis: Even if this ends up being a joke, the fact that children are being threatened and people are beginning to feel uncomfortable is definitely not funny. Parents are starting to feel unsafe, and the kids are expressing their fear of clowns The area is under tight watch and police are patrolling the area more than usual as extra precautions. Also recently, some similar clown sightings have been reported in a Winston-Salem neighborhood in North Carolina, and after getting off of his school bus, a 14 year-old boy in Columbus, Ohio was chased by a knife-wielding man dressed as a clown. I'm a bit nervous because clowns are one of my biggest fears and if I ever see one of these lunatic people dressed as clowns here in Dallas I am moving to Greece. I connected these incidents to the activites of the Ku Klux Klan in 1865. People dressed in robes and white masks to conceal their identities, and terrorized many many people.

  1. This is intresting and I little disturbing. I can't believe someone would terrorize children the way they are, it's just wrong. I also hope this doesn't happen in Dallas. I like you connection to us history.

  2. This is pretty flipping terrifying. And who would get the bright idea to terrify children and families for an extended period of time as a joke? Hilarious. Fear is my favourite type of humour (that was sarcasm, just to clarify. Sometimes it's difficult to convey tone sans italics). Anywho, the connection you made between this and the Ku Klux Klan is rather accurate. Both groups employ fear tactics and target a specific group. This is not okay. Don't flipping terrify children on purpose. Once for a summer camp I had to dress up as a zombie and walk around a museum and this kid was staring at me so I waved. Their face filled with terror almost instantly, and it was the worst feeling in the world. Don't traumatized kids.

  3. My friend lives in North carolina and there were siting there a while ago. He goes out into the forest sometimes but luckily hasn't come across any clowns.

  4. The luring of kids using a clown costume is very unsettling. It reminds me of serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Though he didn't use a clown costume to lure his victims, he did have a clown persona that he used to perform for children.
