Summary:
This year, it is predicted that the US will reach what they call a "carbon emissions milestone." This means that CO2 emissions from natural gas (used for electricity) is expected to surpass that of burning coal by 10 percent. The low cost is a factor that influences companies to buy natural gas over coal (in turn leading to the continuing decline in coal). In hindsight, natural gas is more environment friendly because it emits about half the amount of carbon dioxide as coal. But when you factor in the transport to power plants, there are methane leaks into Earth's atmosphere. Methane, a greenhouse gas, is 35 times as potent as carbon dioxide leading it to contribute to a steady increase of pollution.
Analysis:
The article, posted by Climate Central, presented a factual report on current use of energy in the United States, and used it to present the idea that methane emissions pose a potential threat as the use of natural gas grows. Prior to reading this article, I was aware of the growing pollution and climate change effects, but I learned that there is more than just carbon dioxide that poses a threat for us. Because I knew a little before reading, I understood the extent of how a switch in what energy source we use can effect us. This article was written to the general public unaware of the aftermath of this gradual change to make them aware of it. It's trying to convey the fact that though we are starting to use less carbon dioxide, we are using more methane alternatively which can have a greater effect. This article is important because it informs us greatly on greenhouse house gases and the changes to our Earth.
synthesis:
Global warming is a problem that has occurred throughout our history as well as how humans interact and use things from our environment for their personal gain. Most of the time, there are great consequences in direct effect that are sacrificed in the present because of its benefits. But the main problem in America is what we leave behind for the people that follow.
